Second Genome is seeking a Patent Agent, Intellectual Property to support all aspects of the company’s patent portfolio. The position will report to the Senior Director of Corporate Development and be responsible for preparing prosecuting patent applications both in the US and internationally. He/she will be the sole internal IP stakeholder and will have responsibility over all IP-related activities, focusing primarily on the preparation and prosecution of patents. The Patent Agent will work closely with R&D personnel to support patent filings and interface with external IP counsel as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with R&D personnel and other team members to identify new patentable inventions
  • Prepare and file new patent applications (foreign and domestic)
  • Provide guidance and input on data generation to further enable patent claims
  • Implement strategies to ensure protection of patent appliations
  • Prosecute patent application with USPTO and with foreign patent offices
  • Coordinate and instruct external counsel as needed
  • Oversee prosecution of existing patent portfolio
  • Oversee and evaluate freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses
  • Analyze third party patents and patent applications and provide summaries/updates to company management
  • Demonstrate leadership by advising R&D teams on IP strategy for research programs
  • Counsel and educate R&D personnel on relevant IP matters
  • Review draft publications, poster presentations, conference abstracts, etc. for potential patentable content
  • Support corporate development activities relating to IP matters
  • Support corporate development activities related to drafting and negotiating confidential disclosure agreements, consulting agreements, master services agreements, license agreements, material transfer agreements, and various other agreements as necessary to support R&D business activities


  • Dynamic, team-oriented individual able to interact with individuals in different functions
  • Strong life science expertise and training in biological sciences is required (e.g., M.S., Ph.D.)
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience as a Patent Agent at a law firm is required
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO
  • Prior experience at a small-mid size biotechnology company is a plus
