Second Genome is expanding its genomics laboratory facility for conducting microbiome research. The lab will host various cutting-edge genomic technologies and instruments to process thousands of samples per year. We are looking for an experienced lab director with background in NGS and other genomic technologies to lead the expansion of the services laboratory including acquisition of new equipment and staffing of new personnel. The successful applicant will have an exciting opportunity to build a best-in-class laboratory operation and for the leading microbiome service provider. As part of the Second Genome Solutions team, the Laboratory Director will be responsible for manage the day-to-day operation of processing samples and coordinating projects to deliver on microbiome research studies.

Job Description

  • Responsible for the implementation of all aspects of the laboratory operation to assure the highest quality of our services, efficiency and efficiency of our procedures, timely completion of projects and assignments, correct operation and maintenance of all our equipment.
  • Achieve operational and service goals to deliver client projects as well as assure that the best available methods and technology are being applied to provide Targeted gene sequencing (16S, etc), Shotgun sequencing, Transcriptome sequencing, microarray and other genomic applications.
  • Develop capital and operations budgets to meet forecasted service needs in the laboratory.
  • Ensures competent and sufficient number of staff to meet the dynamic service needs. Responsible for all human resources functions including: hiring, orientation, performance management and recognition. Ensures that new skill training and ongoing competency verification is completed annually.
  • Maintains bench competency and skills.
  • Oversight of lab equipment maintenance, quality systems, implementation of new technology, optimization of procedures, monitoring of TAT and continuous improvement of the lab process.
  • Minimum Requirements
  • Masters or PhD degree in Biology, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Pathology, Engineering or other life Science-related fields.
  • Substantial technical experience with Nucleic Acid extraction, NGS lab processes, digital PCR, library prep and Illumina instrumentation.
  • Proven laboratory management experience in a high throughput commercial or core laboratory.
  • Experience successfully implementing automation instrumentation for scaling solutions of high throughput services
  • Minimum of 5 years working in a molecular biology or genomics lab with a minimum of two years of leadership experience in managing a team of lab personnel.
  • Experience working under a QMS (Quality Management System) developing and maintaining SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
  • Experience in leading, and implementing initiatives within a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work closely with data analysts, sales, marketing and other management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for interactions internally with research and development staff, as well as externally with collaborators and clients
  • Ability and desire to do bench work and operate laboratory instrumentation.

Preferred Requirements

·       PhD degree in Biology, Engineering or other life Science-related fields.

·       Experience in processing microbial community samples and other challenging specimen types.

·       Experience with microarray technology.

·       Work background in quality regulated ISO, GLP and/or CLIA environments.

·       Thorough understanding of processes involving genomic data management and high-throughput NGS data analysis
